Do you realize that you likely have a lot of toxic things in your home? Learn about 20 common household items that have toxins and how to replace them for a healthier toxin free home.

  1. Bed Mattress- This is one that had never occurred to me until recently. I still have my older toxic mattress and I plan to replace it with a natural one probably one made from bamboo or something similar when I get a new bed sometime within the next year or so.
  2. Shampoo and Conditioner- Many of these contain sulfates and parabens and these ingredients are just not good for you. Sodimum layrul sulfate is the most common one to watch out for.
  3. Soap- Similar to shampoo and conditioner- many soaps have sulfates in them that really aren’t good for you.
  4. Dishwasher Soap- Try searching to see if you can find one without sulfates and with more natural ingredients.
  5. Laundry Soap- same as the other soaps. Look for a more natural replacement. Consider the abode line as one to try.
  6. Scented Plugins- This is the worst. These things you think are creating a good smell in your home are also spewing out toxins. There is no reason to use these anyway since there are lots of better alternatives. Read my post about ways to diffuse essential oils without a diffuser for some ideas.
  7. Makeup- This is another one people don’t think about but a lot of makeup has things such as parabens, lead, and other chemicals that really aren’t good for your skin or for you.
  8. Skin Care- the same as soaps and many of the other things already mentioned.
  9. Cookware- This is another one many people don’t think about but you need to be careful as some cookware can leek chemicals into your food, or teflon, or copper. So it really is worth your while to buy higher quality cookware that doesn’t have things that absorb into the food as you cook it.
  10. Hand Soap- Same as other soaps these often have sulfates that aren’t good for you and your health.
  11. Household Cleaners- Many of these also have sulfates and other chemicals that can damage your lungs and other parts of your body over time. I know I used to have big respiratory issues when I used traditional toxic cleaners.
  12. Processed Food- While it can be hard to avoid it, you really need to as it just isn’t good for you.
  13. Body Washes- again a lot of sulfates and perfumes that are endocrine disrupters and other unhealthy things.
  14. Hand and Body Lotions- be careful of scents and perfumes that are often synthetic. The best bet is to use a plain unscented lotion and add in essential oils.
  15. Hand Sanitizers- avoid anything with tricolsan and look for natural essential oil based ones.
  16. Scented Room Sprays and Air Fresheners- Just like the scented plugins these are full of toxins and should be avoided. Use essential oils with a diffuser instead.
  17. Weed Killers- very toxic, explore natural alternatives and yes essential oils can even help with this.
  18. Bleach- can cause breathing and other health issues. Consider vinegar instead.
  19. Perfumes- almost always synthetic and not good for your hormones and can cause other health issues.
  20. Candles- similar to scented plugins, they often give off toxins into the air when burned.

I know it can be hard to give all these up and you don’t have to do it all at once. Instead take baby steps by working on removing these things from your home to live a better, healthier and toxin free life.
