In order to improve my thyroid health, there are some foods I’ve had to stop eating for at least a few years and in some cases I may not eat them ever again. I’ve written another post about why I don’t do Paleo but instead I focus on avoiding what are called goiter centric foods. I’ve found this makes me feel better, gives me more energy and works better for me than any other so called thyroid healing diets. So keep reading to discover the 10 foods I’ve stopped eating for my thyroid health.

  1. Strawberries- as surprising as this one may be, I’ve found that I really do notice a difference in how I feel when I eat strawberries so I’ve had to stop eating them. I eat blueberries, raspberries and blackberries instead. I may at some point eat them again but for now I’m avoiding them completely.
  2. Millet- This is a big one since millet is often one of the ingredients in a lot of gluten free breads and other gluten free grain items. It also seems like it is healthier than rice and other grains but when you have thyroid issues, it is actually worse.
  3. Raw Greens/Green Smoothies- I wrote a post last week about why I don’t drink green smoothies anymore, but raw greens are actually at the top of the list as far as foods you don’t want to eat with thyroid issues and I have to saw that these are one of the big foods on this list I won’t ever be eating again.
  4. Protein Powders- just like green smoothies these are processed foods that contain things that can make your thyroid and goiter worse. In addition many protein powders have sugars, natural flavors (that aren’t natural by the way) and other add ins that aren’t good for the health of anyone yet alone anyone with thyroid issues.
  1. Almonds- This one is a bit of a twist as I am still using almonds to make almond milk, however, I no longer just eat almonds plain. Almonds and really a lot of other nuts and seeds need to be soaked in order to make them less goiter centric. So in a way I am still eating almonds in almond milk or almond flour but I’m not just eating plain almonds.
  2. Most gluten free bread- As mentioned with millet above, many gluten free breads especially those with ancient grains are actually harder on your digestive system than wheat. So I’ve quit eating most gluten free breads, especially those with ancient grains.
  3. Sorghum Flour- This is connected to number 6 as sorghum is very hard on your digestive system and is a common ancient grain in gluten free breads. However, there are some that have only brown rice flour and or potato starch and tapioca. These are the kinds of gluten free breads I do still eat but in moderation.
  4. Dairy Free Ice Cream- While I love eating this I had developed an addiction to it and most of it has a lot of sugar and other additives that aren’t good for your thyroid. However, I was watching last night’s Shark Tank and saw a new vegan ice cream that I want to try that may be a better alternative.
  5. Granola- Most granola has almonds, a lot of sugar and other things that just aren’t good foods for your thyroid.
  6. Nearly everything that comes in a box- while processed foods are terrible for everyone, when you are trying to heal your thyroid it’s even worse. The main exception that I do eat is brown rice and chickpea pastas other anything else that happens to come in a box but really only has 1,2 or maybe 3 ingredients and it is all natural.
