When I travel I always bring healthy traveling snacks and sometimes other foods. My suitcase is usually at least one third full with healthy traveling snacks and food. When I was younger and before I went gluten free 10 years ago, I usually took less food with me. However, ever since I’ve been gluten free, mostly dairy free and sugar free, I have had to bring even more since I don’t know if I will find food that fits my diet wherever I’m at while traveling. I also have found that bringing food with me is cheaper and healthier. So keep reading to learn what I bring with me.

  1. Turkey sticks. These are sticks of dried turkey. I find these make a great protein snack while traveling. I get them from either Trader Joe’s or Thrive Market. If you like beef they have beef ones too. I just don’t like beef so I only buy the turkey ones. These are a more expensive option for day to day eating so I save them for a healthy traveling snack.
  2. Fruit- Depending upon where you are going, you can take a few apples or oranges, however, dried bananas, or other fruit snacks or dried fruit is usually better. The just fruit bars from Costco are among the best.
  3. Nuts- These are quite filling and don’t take up much space. I like to make a mixture of cashews, almonds, peanuts, pecans and walnuts. I buy my nuts in bulk and put them into my own plastic baggies.
  4. Rice and Quinoa precooked and microwavable bags. Seeds of Change is one brand or Thrive Market has their own brand that is cheaper. These work great if you will be staying somewhere with a microwave and want to save money on eating out.
  5. Dry soup cans. You can find some good pea, lentil and bean ones where you just add water and microwave it for about 60 seconds. I’ve found them at Sprouts, Kroger etc.
  6. Dried plantains- they sell some great ones at Trader Joe’s or you can find other options at Mexican specialty stores or possibly other places. I’ve personally only bought them at Trader Joe’s though. \
  7. Gluten free crackers or rice cakes. Rice cakes are larger and take up more space so if space in your luggage is an issue, you may want to go with gluten free crackers instead.
  8. Packets with nut butters. Usually almond or peanut butter will be less expensive and easier to find. I’ve also found these on Thrive Market or some other grocery stores may have them.

While these are not all of the healthy traveling snacks I have taken with me, these are the ones I take with me on pretty much every trip.
