Do you spend a lot of money on health products and services? If so you are like me and lots of other people I know. While investing in your health is always a good idea, there are ways to save money on health products and services. I’ve learned over the past few years that there are limits to how much I can and am willing to spend as well as different ways to save money while still getting good quality and service.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself to start saving money on health products and services?

  1. Do I really need this exact product or service or will something similar work just as well?
  2. Where is the least expensive place I can get this product or service and still have the same quality? For example, I’ve found that most of the time you can get just as good an acupuncture treatment at a community acupuncture clinic as you can at a more expensive acupuncture clinic. Ther are some exceptions though like if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, have cancer or need an acupuncturist who specializes in a certain kind of treatment. Also while I certainly don’t recommend buying most supplements and health products at Walmart or Dollar Tree, I have found some great things there so you need to price check and read labels.
  3. Can I get a discount through my health insurance even if it isn’t covered? For example a lot of health insurance companies have discount programs for things like acupuncture, massage and vitamins even though they aren’t covered directly.
  4. What are all of the different options for a natural solution for the health problem I am looking to address? It is rare that there is really only one product or service that can help. Usually there are a variety of solutions and you need to look at all of them and determine which one is the most cost effective as well as the best for your health long term.
  5. Having memberships at places like Thrive Market, Costco, Sam’s Club and Amazon Prime is usually a great idea when saving money on health products and services. However, like everything else you need to price check against free online sources like Amazon without prime, Vitacost.com and Iherb.com to name a few.
  6. Will purchasing a membership to a program or having products sent to me on autoship save me money? Sometimes the answer is yes and sometimes it’s no.
  7. Are there ways I can spend more money on healthier and more organic foods and in exchange spend less on vitamins, supplements and other health services. Sometimes it’s worth the extra investment in your food budget for fewer health bills overall.
  8. How good do I feel most of the time? If you are feeling well even if you have a chronic condition or autoimmune disease, then you may not need to continue frequent trips to the chiropractor, acupuncturist, or naturopath.
  9. What role is the environment, chemicals and other factors playing in my health? And are there ways to reduce toxic exposure either for free or with a small investment that will pay off over the long term?
  10. What can I do at home that will save me money? For example, I have used my own hot water bottle, back brace, hot pad, massage stones and other household items to pamper myself and get minor main relief instead of spending large amounts of money on massage, acupuncture, chiropractic and other services.

In short the truth about saving money on health products and services is that you need to do research, check multiple options and evaluate your real need for something before you purchase. And if you are paying lots of money without long term results try something else.
