Are you wondering what foods to heal after surgery you can and should eat? If you are like most people after surgery, if your doctor recommends any foods, they usually recommend things like yogurt, ice cream and smoothies which often have a ton of sugar and not that much real nutrition. This is the opposite of what you need to really heal from surgery. In order to heal from surgery quickly and without drugs, (yes I did this, see my other post), you need to fuel your body with foods to heal after surgery that will really fuel you, decrease inflammation and help you heal.

Here are some of my favorite foods to heal after surgery:

Turmeric- you can either take it as a supplement or make a recipe like a golden milk to drink, or add it to rice to make a turmeric rice. I’ve done this before with my rice cooker and you can easily make it ahead of time so you have it ready for after your surgery.

Green smoothie- While I don’t drink these very often anymore due to my thyroid issues, they are a great food for after surgery. I recommend using a greens powder with some almond or coconut milk and some banana and either some berries or pineapple.

Fruit- yes just plain fruit like a banana, an apple or a bowl of berries. You can even use canned fruit as long as it is the fruit in it’s own juice with no sugar added, or frozen fruit that you can let sit out or microwave for a minute.

Dark green vegetables- like steamed broccoli, spinach, kale, or chard. You can add some spices for flavor or some fish like salmon, or chicken or turkey.

Eggs- even if you can’t chew due to surgery that has affected your mouth, you should be able to mush some eggs with your teeth and these are a healthier after surgery food option. If you want eggs that are even easier to mush, you can hard boil them.

Quinoa or a quinoa salad. It’s best if you fill it with a variety of vegetables. You will want to have quinoa pre-cooked in the fridge and vegetables all chopped and ready to go.

A green salad with vegetables, tuna, chicken or fish. The darker green lettuce like you find in a spring mix with some spinach is best as the lighter colored lettuce doesn’t have as many nutrients.

Soup- you can make a plain soup like a chicken, turkey or beef broth soup, or you can make one that has vegetables added into it. If you can chew food just fine, you could even make something like a lentil and vegetable soup, or a split pea and ham soup or a chicken, tomato and vegetable soup. To make cooking easier you can buy canned broth to heat up. I like the Member’s Mark brand from Walmart or Sam’s Club. You can also look at the Amy’s soups for canned soups that are healthier, gluten free and sugar free.

In short, you really can eat anything healthy, you just want to avoid anything with sugar, processed foods, processed oils, or anything with a lot of carbs. I recommend avoiding bread, potatoes, too much rice or anything similar for at least the first few days after surgery.
