gluten free snacks

Gluten free snacks can be one of the hardest parts of a gluten free lifestyle. In fact, as a health coach who works with people who are beginning a gluten free lifestyle or who have been trying to live gluten free for awhile and are struggling, knowing what to eat for gluten free snacks is usually one of their biggest challenges. However, once you figure out what you are doing and with a bit of experimenting, you will find that preparing gluten free snacks that you can take on the go with you anywhere and that even your children will want to eat are not that hard. Here are 10 of my favorites:

1. Fruit Snacks. You have to be careful with these though because not all fruit snacks are gluten free and some have artificial dyes and too much added sugar. My personal favorite are Annie’s organic ones which you can get on Amazon or sometimes at Costco or maybe other stores as well.

I also really like the ones by Yum Earth.

2. An apple with some peanut butter or almond butter. You can use a small serving size tupperware container to cary around a small amount of peanut butter, or almond butter. If you or your child has nut allergies you can also try Sunbutter Sunflower Spread – Creamy 16 oz (454 grams) Jar.

3. Banana and peanut butter, almond butter or sun butter as noted above.

You can also make a peanut butter and banana sandwich with gluten free bread.

4. Sandwich baggie with nuts. I like to use a variety of almonds, walnuts, cashews and peanuts. You can also through in raisins or other dried fruits.

5. Lara bars. These great bars are made of only fruits, and nuts with the exception of the chocolate ones that also have chocolate chips in them.

6. Kind bars. These are all gluten free and contain fruits, nuts, and certified gluten free oats as well as dark chocolate. The cherry cashew kind listed below is my favorite but all of them are good.

7. Rice crackers. While there are several brands, I really like the back to nature ones shown below. There is also a really good brand you can get at Costco. I can’t remember the name right now but there are 6 packs in a box. 3 packs of sesame flavored ones and 3 packs of 3 cheese flavored. The downside to these is that if you can’t have cheese, then you would be wasting 3 packages in every box or have to give them away to someone else.

8. Hummus with carrot sticks, celery sticks, olives, or rice crackers.

You can get plain hummus or there are flavored kinds with red peppers, avocado, garlic and others. I also really like hummus as a sauce with rice or quinoa dishes or on my salads.

9. An avocado. Yes really, you can just open up one and enjoy as a great gluten free snack.

10. Chia seed pudding. These makes a great filling snack or even breakfast. You soak chia seeds in coconut or almond milk for about 30-60 minutes. Then you add in 2-3 drops of stevia or an essential oil like orange, or lemon and then eat.
