Creating and following an asthma diet can be a challenge. However, it can make a big difference and help to play a role in getting off asthma inhalers and in controlling asthma without drugs. I know following an asthma diet has made a huge difference for me. One of the reasons it is so challenging is because most doctors either don’t know or won’t admit that following an asthma diet can have an enormous impact on your ability to control and manage your asthma. Another reason is that there is no such thing as one asthma diet that works for everyone who has asthma. However, there are some key things that work for most people.

1. Stop drinking cow’s milk. Cow’s milk can increase asthma because it creates mucus that increases breathing difficulties in people with asthma.

2. Even if you are not lactose intolerant be careful about eating too many dairy products.

3. Keep an asthma diet journal. Every time you have an asthma attack write down in your journal all the food you ate and everything you drank during the 24 hours before. Take note of any common patterns and avoid eating or drinking the food or drink that you had since these are likely asthma triggers for you.

4. Be very careful about eating processed foods or things like white flour or too much sugar.

5. If you have not been tested for a gluten allergy or other allergies, get tested and then follow the directions that you are given.

6. Take a high quality supplement with high amounts of vitamin C and vitamin B12.

What else have you done to make an asthma diet work for you? or to decrease your asthma symptoms?
