Introduction
Creating a daily routine for healing is a must for anyone, but it is especially crucial when you have an autoimmune condition. Furthermore when you’re burnt out, you must have a daily routine for healing or your condition and your burn out will only get worse. That said, if you really have burn out, you must involve a doctor and or therapist, as burn out is an actual medical condition.
Getting Started with a Gentle Daily Routine for Healing
When you are first getting started creating your healing routine, you need to ask yourself a few questions in order to create one that will be effective and that you will stick with for the long term.
- How much time can I devote to my healing routine? I recommend a minimum of 1 hour, ideally either first thing in the morning or in the evening before bed. If you really can’t devote that much time, then 30 minutes twice a day can work.
- What activities will really help me relax and heal? I recommend things such as meditation, prayer, journaling, reading, bubble baths, going for a walk, and stretching. Using an infrared sauna or infrared lights can also be beneficial. I personally use my infrared sauna for 30 minutes before bed 5-6 nights per week as part of my personal bedtime routine.
- What activities will not work for me now that I may want to try in the future? Things such as higher impact exercise, going to the gym, getting massages, cold showers or plunges etc.
- What lifestyle changes do I need to make in order to really heal? This is a hard question to answer honestly but an important one. I’ve spoken with people on my podcast who had to make drastic moves to heal like quitting their jobs, getting a divorce, moving and other big moves. I’m not saying this applies to you, but if you are truly burned out and stressed, it’s worth at least evaluating.
- How much sleep each night am I really getting? And is it high quality sleep? If you aren’t getting enough, then you may want to start your healing routine by focusing on getting more sleep.
Continuing your healing routine after the first few weeks or months
No one can stick with the same routine every day for months nor should you. The routine that heals you when you are first getting started, will not be the same one that will heal you a year later. I recommend trying more or less the same healing schedule for the first month, then re-evaluating, making any necessary tweaks and then continuing to make changes as time goes on. I also recommend making a list of healing actions you will take monthly or bi-monthly. For me, my list includes: chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, and 1-2 new activities or places. I also go on vacations at least twice a year and ideally I like to visit a new state or country for at least one of those. If your health and or budget won’t permit that, then you can do stay cations until you can visit the world.
Getting Help
Beyond getting help from a doctor or therapist, you may also want to get help from a health or wellness coach such as myself or ask for help from a trusted friend or family member. It can also help to take a break from life for a week or two. This can be difficult but if at all possible, I highly recommend it. If you are actually experiencing burn out and can get a medical diagnosis, then you could use sick leave or medical leave from your job.
While it might seem simple creating a gentle daily routine for healing really is crucial. You can do it, I believe in you and I’m here to help.
