Introduction

Do you use healthy eating habits to help you improve your autoimmune health? Regardless these 7 Healthy Eating Habits can help you improve your health and wellbeing. Embracing healthy eating habits is a must for everyone however, if you have an autoimmune disorder, it’s even more important. In this blog post, I will discuss the 7 Healthy Eating Habits I’ve embraced for my health and wellbeing and to thrive with Hashimotos rather than just surviving.

The Eating Habits

  1. Read all food labels. I never buy anything with a label without reading the label in detail. I try to buy mostly foods that do not have a label but if there is a label, I read it and scrutinize it carefuly. If you need help with reading labels, check out my label reading group coaching program. Most of our food has things added to it that are totally unnecesary and that our ancestors wouldn’t even recognize as food.
  2. I don’t eat sugar or anyting with sugar in it. At least 95% of the time. Occasionally I will eat a piece of chocolate with sugar or something but I almost never eat sugar. I’m a nazi about checking labels for added sugar and avoiding those foods. I eat only fruit or things I make myself with honey or sugar free items with stevia, or monk fruit when I want something sweet.
  3. I cook 99% of my food from scratch at home. When I do eat out or eat something that I didn’t cook myself, I am very picky. I read labels and ask a lot of questions. I have really only about 10 restaurants that fit my requirements for eating out.
  4. I’m gluten free. Many people mistakenly believe that you only need to avoid gluten if you have celiac disease. In fact, if you have any autoimmune condition you should try it for at least 6 months. You may find if you aren’t celiac that you can tolerate sourdough bread or you don’t have to be as careful about cross contamination. However, gluten is inflammatory and not good for a lot of people and our digestive systems.
  5. I avoid seed oils like the plague. These are added to a lot of foods but are really bad for your health. These include oils like canola, palm, sunflower and safflower. I only eat avocado oil, coconut oil, or olive oil.
  6. I eat the rainbow. You’ve probably heard this before but you really do need to eat a variety of vegetables and fruits of different colors. Doing this will help your inflammation, your metabolism and much more. Except for caulliflower, I avoid anything that is white. When I do eat potatoes I eat red ones and not white ones.
  7. I eat mostly chicken, turkey and fish and avoid most red meat. I also buy higher quality organic whenever possible meats and I avoid proccessed meats that have a lot of sugar, and other additves to them.
