Do you neeed some unique self care ideas? I know a lot of us could use them and when you are working on thriving with an autoimmune condition you need them even more. Here are 25 unique self care ideas for you to try. (In reality some of them may not be things you’ve never heard of but rather things you haven’t considered self care.)

  1. Use a dry brush on your arms and legs after showering or bathing. I like to do this regularly no matter what becuase it helps with my circulation. A dry brush is a long brush that you use to brush your skin. You can find them on Amazon, Walmart or really any places that sells skin care and personal items.
  2. Make your favorite cup of herbal tea and find a nice and quite place to enjoy it while reading a book.
  3. Watch a funny movie or TV show. I find that something like Mister Ed always hits the spot if I can’t come up with anything else. I own both sets of the Best of Mister Ed DVDS.
  4. Do some stretching exercises. You can find people showing how to do them on Youtube, or invest in a DVD like Easy Healing Stretches from Prevention.
  5. Either give yourself an aromatouch technique on the hands and feet or find someone else who knows how to do it, to give you one on the back.
  6. Use a few of your favorite essential oils for emotional wellness and wellbeing instead of using them for physical wellbeing.
  7. Turn off your phone and computer and avoid all social media, calls, texts and other communication for at least 6 hours during the day.
  8. Find a class on a new topic to attend. This can be in person or virtually. There are a lot of virtual options on airbnb, or with sites like skillshare, udemy etc.
  9. Find a quiet place to sit and read through a collection of positive and uplifting quotes and affirmations. Then choose 1-2 to focus on for the next few weeks.
  10. Play an online game. I like ones of solliataire, or even something like geo guessr which is a game that lets you guess where in the world certain scenes or items are located.
  11. Search instagram for the hashtag self care ideas and find a few that appeal to you and try them out.
  12. Use an infrared light or lights for 10 minutes on a part of your body that needs extra love. I do this everyday on my thyroid.
  13. Find an upbeat song that you like and dance to it. Something like the song Happy by Pharrel Williams or Can’t Stop that Feeling by Justin Timberlake.
  14. Go on a bike ride around the neighborhood. I don’t currently own a bike but I plan to get one within the next year.
  15. Make a grattitude list of everything you are grateful for. Make at least 50 items on it but don’t stop until you have written down everything you can think of.
  16. Find or create a fire to sit by and enjoy. You can either turn on your fireplace, create a fire in an outdoor fire pit in your backyard if you have one or in the canyon or at a camping spot (as long as it is legal and safe) or you can find a youtube video of a fireplace with music or there is an app called fireplace HD.
  17. Find a place outdoors where birds are singing and sit there and listen to their songs. Try to identify which birds they are.
  18. Do some kind of sewing, knitting, crochet, or embroidery. It doesn’t have to be perfect, you just need to do it for the fun and enjoyment of it.
  19. Find water and enjoy playing it in or relaxing by listening to it. It can be a river, stream, lake or waterfall. You can either sit by it and listen to it and watch it, or you can play in it if safe to do so, or you can find one virtually and relax by listening to it.
  20. Juggle. You can either use balls or apples, or anything else you think you can use to juggle successfully. If you need help learning how, find a youtube video or some other online instruction.
  21. Try blowing bubbles. You can find large bubble blowing containers at dollar tree or walmart. Have fun with them just like you did as a child.
  22. Play with silly putty or play dough. If you are like most adults, it’s been years since you did this and yet it can be very therapeutic and a great form of self care.
  23. Think about any activity that you used to do as a child but haven’t done in years and then do it.
  24. Try zumba. You can either go to a class, get a DVD with it or find some on youtube.
  25. Go window shopping. Don’t spend anything. Literally just look and take notes of any of the things you could use or would like to get some day.
