Do you want to have a drug free surgery recovery?  Even if it’s not something you have ever considered, you really should. Using drugs after surgery is one of the most common ways that people get addicted to drugs in the United States and probably in other countries as well.

You may think that having a drug free surgery recovery isn’t possible for you, however, if you are at all intrigued by the idea, I encourage you to keep reading to learn how I did it and how I believe you can do it too.

  1. Change your mindset. If you are going to be successful with this, the first thing you must do is to have the mindset and the attitude that it can be done and you can do it.
  2. Have a big reason why you are not going to take prescription drugs after surgery. Maybe you have a tendency to get addicted or you know someone close to you who did, or you just don’t want the drugs in your body. For me it was a combination of all three of these.
  3. Gather your needed supplies. For me this included things such as essential oils, arnica, turmeric, a fridge and freezer full of simple to prepare, ready to eat yet healthy and sugar free meals, ice packs, heat packs, infrared lights etc.
  4. Don’t even fulfill the prescription for your drugs after your surgery. If you don’t have them, you won’t be able to take them.
  5. Consider using meditation, NLP and hypnosis. If you don’t do these currently, start learning about them and find some good meditations and practices that will work for you. Seek out the help of a professional if needed.
  6. Research natural pain solutions. I recommend researching a variety of them. If you have pain, experiment with different ones to figure out which ones work the best for you. Each one of us is different so the same things won’t necessarily work for everyone.
  7. Create a plan for your first 3 days after surgery. This is usually when the pain is the worst and the temptation to want to give in and take the drugs is the strongest.
  8. Find some funny and entertaining movies and TV shows to watch and make sure you either have the DVDS or have them saved to your watchlist on streaming so you are ready with things to entertain and distract you. You may also want to include some music with this.
  9. Make sure you have a comfortable bed, pillows, blankets etc. I personally got a new bed the day before as my old bed was more than 7 years old and I needed to replace it soon anyway. This isn’t necessary but you do need to make sure you will be comfortable while lying down since you will be doing it more than usual.
  10. Remember the power of ice and heat and make sure you are well equipped with a few options for this. These are two of the most powerful methods of reducing pain and inflammation yet we often forget them.
