Are you wondering what the number one most important thing about essential oils is? Me too. No just kidding, of course there are several things I think about when it comes to the number one most important thing about essential oils, but at the end of the day, the number one most important thing in my opinion is…
The quality and purity of essential oils.
Yes, really. There are lots of factors that can be important when it comes to using and choosing essential oils, but if the quality and purity of the essential oils you are using isn’t good then nothing else matters. You must have high quality essential oils that are truly pure and not just ones that say it on the bottle. In the United States, a bottle of essential oil can say it is 100% pure even if there is only 3% oil in the bottle and the rest is carrier oil, or perfume or other plant matter that isn’t actually essential oil.
Furthermore, many essential oil companies get their oils from brokers who don’t really know what the quality and purity is. In addition many suppliers lack the equipment, resources and know how to be able to do adequate lab testing to ensure purity and quality.
So if quality and purity of essential oils is so important how do you know if an essential oil you are using or considering using is pure and off the highest quality?
It can be tough but here are some general guidelines:
- What is the price? If the price is too cheap then that is a sign the oil isn’t of the highest quality. For example frankincense and rose essential oil are always expensive and they always cost a lot more than other oils like lemon, lavender or peppermint. Also if a certain brand is charging the same price for all essential oils, that is a warning sign.
- Is the latin name of the essential oil on the bottle? If not, avoid that oil.
- What does it smell like? Does it smell pure or perfume like?
- If it’s one of the oils that is considered GRAS by the FDA, then can you take it internally? That doesn’t mean you should but you should be able to if you want to.
- What lab tests are available on that oil? If none, then it probably isn’t the highest quality.
- What country or countries does the oil come from? Does the plant grow natively in those countries?
While answering these questions doesn’t guarantee perfect quality and purity, they are a good start. Over time as you use more essential oils, you will be able to tell when you have a good quality and pure essential oil.
That said, why are high quality and pure essential oils so important?
Well it depends on why you are using it but in general unless you are using it only for cleaning, then purity matters a lot.
Pure oils will work better and more effectively. They are better for your health. Often oils of poor quality won’t give you the results you are looking for and if anything can sometimes cause health issues.
