Are you making any of these gut health mistakes? Too often we do things that dammage our gut health without realizing it and these are nine of the biggest gut health mistakes many people make.

  1. Not realizing how everything impacts your gut. Yes it’s true. Everything impacts your gut in some way. Some things have a bigger impact that others and some things cause more dammage than others and some things can heal the gut easier and quicker than others. I read the statement once that says: What happens in the gut doesn’t stay in the gut. It’s a play on the idea that what happens in Vegas, doesn’t stay in Vegas and nothing could be further from the truth. What happens in your gut, affects your brain, your thyroid, your adrenal glands, your muscles, your hormones, and literally everything. Unfortunately this isn’t something that is taught in medical school. Nor is it something that most doctors are fully aware of. As a result most people aren’t aware to the extend that your gut health affects the health of the rest of your body. In fact, if I could choose one of these 9 gut health mistakes that is the biggest problem, it is this one. I put it first because it is the most important.
  2. Eating gluten- Yes I know this isn’t what you want to hear and for some people, they are lucky enough that they can still tolerate small amounts. However, for far too many of us, gluten is damaging to the gut and no you don’t have to have celiac disease for gluten to be a problem. Nor do you have to have an allergy or a sensitivity. If you have any autoimmune condition, or if you have pain on a regular basis, in any part of your body, or regular fatigue, then you should not be eating gluten. (In some cases, you may be able to make an exception for sourdough bread though.)
  3. Eating dairy products- This is one of those things that is more dammaging to some than others. Some people can still tolerate some fermented dairy or goat cheese. However, for many of us, dairy just isn’t good for us. I know it’s hard. I still love cheese but I’ve learned that it just doesn’t love me back and so I have to avoid it. Fortunately, there are lots of good dairy alternatives. Read this blog post for some good dairy free ideas.
  4. Not eating fermented foods- Fermented foods are really good for your digestion and it’s something I’m trying to eat more of. Things like pickles, kamboucha, kimchi, apple cider vinegar and kiefer. You can buy these or learn to make your own. I’m working on doing both. I recently tried this recipe for fermented red onions and they tasted really good.
  5. Not taking probiotics- These days, probiotics really are a must for everyone. Learn why probiotics are a must for good gut health. If you need help, choosing the right one, let’s talk. I’d be happy to help. There are dozens of probiotics you can buy but really only about 4-5 that I would recommend. I have one specific one I take currently.
  6. Thinking other health issues have nothing to do with the gut. This is related to number one. Too many doctors don’t recognize the connections between things like rashes, muscle aches and pains and headaches to the gut but they are connected. Any health issue you have, has come connection to the gut and looking into your gut health first, is a must.
  7. Taking too many over the counter drugs- The more of these you take, the more your gut health becomes dammaged. You really should avoid even things like ibuprofen as much as possible. Yes I still take it occasionally but I try to use natural alternatives first. Taking allergy meds year round can also be the cause of a dammaged gut. They aren’t meant to be taken all the time.
  8. Not doing a detox- Doing a detox at least quarterly is really a must. There are a variety of ways to do it and I offer personalized help to making sure you do it properly.
  9. Not worrying about candida- Candida otherwise known as a yeast infecction, must be addressed or good gut health is not something you will ever achieve. This is another thing that isn’t often recognized as a problem by Western Medicine. However, you really must heal from it, in order for you to have good gut health.

Which one or ones of these did you find the most surprising? Want help? Let’s talk and I’d be happy to help you.
