Your thyroid health requires you to do and not do certain things. However, too often it can be confusing to know what these things are. Here are ten thyroid zappers- things that ruin your thyroid health if you don’t pay attention.
- Not getting the right thyroid labs done. This is not only the first on my list but the most important one for ensuring your thyroid health is optimal. If you don’t have the right thyroid labs then you can’t even begin your healing journey. Not only that but this is one of the most common problems many women (and some men) encounter as it can be difficult if not impossible to get a doctor to agree to run the right thyroid labs. In fact, I went to 3 doctors before I finally got the right ones done on me.
- Sugar- I know this isn’t news to you, but you really have to avoid sugar as much as possible in order to have optimal thyroid health. Fruit doesn’t count but any kind of sugar such as cane sugar, brown sugar etc does. You can also try coconut sugar, monk fruit and stevia to see how your body reacts. I know I can tell the difference when I have had too much sugar.
- Caffeine- Again another one many people don’t consider and something that can be hard for some people but you really must limit and in some cases climate caffeine. This includes coffee, sodas, teas and anything else with caffeine in it.
- Gluten- Another culprit. If you have thyroid problems and you haven’t at least tried to go gluten free, then you really should. Some people can tolerate small amounts of gluten even if they have a thyroid issue, but most people with thyroid challenges do better without it. I know I can’t handle gluten at all.
- Dairy- Another food that is highly inflammatory and can cause problems for a lot of people with a thyroid condition. I know my body is okay with some butter but cheese, milk, ice cream and any other dairy product does not react well for me. I really have to do what I can to avoid dairy products.
- Not taking the right supplements- This one is tricky and near impossible for anyone to figure out without consulting a doctor or health care professional of some kind. Most people with a thyroid condition will need to talk extra iodine, vitamin c, vitamin d, and zinc. However, many of us can also benefit from turmeric, quercetin, and sometimes others as well. Probiotics for gut health are also a must for nearly everyone.
- Processed Foods- You probably already know this but processed foods are the enemy of good health for everyone, and if your thyroid health isn’t good then they are even worse. I strive to make 90% of my diet one ingredient foods. This helps me to avoid eating too many processed foods.
- Not taking care of your adrenal glands- This one is often missed as too many people fail to realize the connection between your thyroid and your adrenal gland. However, these two glands in your body work together and must both be balanced in order for you to have the best thyroid health possible.
- The wrong thyroid medications- Another common mistake. You want to make sure that you are taking the right thyroid medications. For most people this will mean getting your blood drawn for labs every 3 months for the first 1-2 years after a diagnosis with Hashimoto’s or another thyroid problem.
- Too much stress- Stress is the common factor among a lot of health challenges and thyroid issues are no exception. Do what you can to limit your stress.
