Introduction
Getting a Hashimoto’s Diagnosis is life changing and so it’s understandable that you will make some mistakes in an effort to get well and start feeling like yourself again.
That said, over the years since I got my Hashimoto’s diagnosis in 2018, and from over 3 years of blogging and podcasting about autoimmune conditions including Hashimotos, there are 5 mistakes women with Hashimoto’s make that keep them stuck over and over again. That said, I’ve also made most of these mistakes myself, so it’s not like I haven’t fallen into these traps myself.
What are these 5 mistakes women with Hashimoto’s make that keep them stuck?
- Relying only on medications and supplements to heal. The reality is that while these play a role and an important part of healing Hashimoto’s, most women will not heal their Hashimoto’s with medications and supplements alone. You also have to make other lifestyle changes and try other things as well. In addition to relying only on these, I also see a lot of women get stuck by going down the rabbit hole of taking too many supplements, or the wrong ones. Getting tested to see what you actually need is a must. You really must test and not just guess.
- Assuming that a gluten free diet alone will fix your Hashimoto’s and your thyroid. Wouldn’t it be great if it was that simple? I had already been gluten free for 5 years when I got diagnosed, so obviously giving up gluten wasn’t enough. Hashimoto’s and Celiac disease are not the same and Hashimoto’s is much more complex. That said, I do firmly believe that you must give up gluten as part of your healing. However, dairy, sugar, soy, corn and usually other personalized food sensitivities must go as well.
- Falling into the one size fits all trap. There isn’t one clear path to healing Hashimoto’s that will work for all women. Or all men for that matter. Over the years and after interviewing several people with Hashimoto’s on my podcast- Autoimmune Rehab, I’ve heard a different story about how they healed from each person. What worked for me, won’t necessarily work for you.
- Listening to your doctor like they are God and know everything about you and what will work for you. While you should listen to your doctor to the extent that what they are saying makes sense, you know your body the best and you will also need to pursue other things that they aren’t necessarily recommending or that they don’t know about. I also think seeing specialists like endocrinologists are usually a waste of time and money for most women with Hashimoto’s. They usually don’t know that much about autoimmune thyroid issues and their focus is on maintaining or trying to maintain so-called normal levels. Furthermore, they have a tendency to act like losing your thyroid wouldn’t be that big a deal, when in fact, it would be a disaster.
- Assuming that your thyroid is the only problem. In fact, not only is your thyroid not the only problem when you have Hashimoto’s but it’s actually a minor issue. You have a systemic autoimmune issue and your adrenal glands are likely having more problems than your thyroid.
