Introduction
Supplements for thyroid health is big business and for many good reasons. People who struggle with thyroid issues often have vitamin and mineral deficiencies and do need supplements in additional to following certain diet protocols. That said, there are a lot of supplements for thyroid health that you may not need and some that you probably do. Keep reading to learn about the thyroid supplements I have ditched and the three that have been life changing for me.
The first kind of supplement I quit taking is anything that contains just 1 or 2 vitamins or minerals. While I do have a tendency like most people with Hashimoto’s to run deficient in B12 and Vitamin D, I’ve found that single vitamin supplements aren’t as effective as they are often marketed. You really need other things to activate them and make them as effective as you need them to be.
The second kind I’ve quit taking is anything that is based on a fad or has a lot of ads or is promoted by influencers or on social media. I’ve tried a few and found too many of these to not live up to their promises. They also aren’t usually the highest quality and often make claims that are questionable. They also promote a lot of supplement that claim you will lose weight for example, yet I’ve tried a few and didn’t actually lose any weight.
The third kind of supplement that I’ve quit taking is anything that doesn’t give me results after 90 days or that isn’t something that my actual lab results show I have a real need to implement. I’ve become a huge fan of test don’t guess and I find that if you aren’t seeing any results after 90 days, then continuing to take more, isn’t going to help you.
Now for the three kinds of supplements that have been live changing- first a high quality fish oil. I really love the Doterra omega fish oil and I notice a big different not only in how I feel but my lab results changed after a few months of taking it. I specifically noticed a difference in the balance between my Omega 3 and Omega 6 levels. Plus I notice that I have more energy and fewer digestive issues when I take it compared to when I don’t.
The second kind that has been life changing is a thyroid specific supplement. I really like the ones from Restart Med. These are formulated specifically for the thyroid so it makes sense that I notice a difference from taking them.
The third kind are probiotics. I’ve tried various kinds and I find the best strategy is to rotate through a few different ones in order to make sure you are getting different strains.
