Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid gland, leading to an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism. This condition can result in a range of symptoms, including fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, and depression. While medications are often used to manage and treat Hashimoto’s, there are also several supplements that may be beneficial for those with this condition. Here are seven supplements to consider for managing and treating Hashimoto’s.
- Selenium
Selenium is a mineral that plays a crucial role in thyroid function. It helps to convert the inactive form of thyroid hormone (T4) into the active form (T3) that the body can use. Additionally, selenium has antioxidant properties, which can help to reduce inflammation in the thyroid gland. Research has shown that supplementing with selenium can improve thyroid function and reduce thyroid antibodies in people with Hashimoto’s.
- Vitamin D
Vitamin D is essential for overall health, and it also plays a role in thyroid function. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to autoimmune thyroid diseases, including Hashimoto’s. Supplementing with vitamin D may help to reduce inflammation in the thyroid gland and improve thyroid function. It’s important to note that vitamin D supplements can interact with certain medications, so it’s best to talk to a healthcare provider before starting a supplement regimen.
- Zinc
Zinc is a mineral that is important for thyroid function and immune system health. Research has shown that people with Hashimoto’s tend to have lower levels of zinc than those without the condition. Supplementing with zinc may help to improve thyroid function and reduce inflammation in the thyroid gland.
- Magnesium
Magnesium is another mineral that plays a role in thyroid function. It is involved in the conversion of T4 to T3, and low levels of magnesium have been linked to thyroid dysfunction. Supplementing with magnesium may help to improve thyroid function and reduce inflammation in the thyroid gland.
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that live in the gut. They play a crucial role in immune system health and may also help to reduce inflammation in the body. Research has shown that people with autoimmune thyroid diseases, including Hashimoto’s, tend to have an imbalance of gut bacteria. Supplementing with probiotics may help to restore this balance and improve overall health. I take a probiotic every day and have found it to be very helpful.
- Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. It may help to reduce stress and anxiety, which can be beneficial for people with Hashimoto’s. Additionally, research has shown that ashwagandha can improve thyroid function and reduce thyroid antibodies in people with the condition. I take a supplement that has ashwagandha in it along with some other things and have found it to also help me with my adrenal function and to help me have more energy.
- Curcumin
Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric, a spice commonly used in Indian cuisine. It has potent anti-inflammatory properties and may be beneficial for people with autoimmune conditions, including Hashimoto’s. Research has shown that curcumin can reduce inflammation in the thyroid gland and improve thyroid function. I take a turmeric supplement every day and I also try to cook with turmeric at least a few times per week.
While supplements can be beneficial for managing and treating Hashimoto’s, it’s important to remember that they should not replace medications prescribed by a healthcare provider. Additionally, supplements should be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider, as some supplements can interact with medications or cause side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine which supplements may be appropriate for you and your individual needs. Likewise if you would like to discuss supplements with me, schedule a time to talk here.
