One day while attending the University of Utah, I read an ad in my student newspaper. It seemed innocent enough. They were asking for sales, customer service and people skills. So I called the number and asked for more information. They answered my questions to my satisfaction and asked me to send them a resume. I did so, and received a call back within a few days for a job interview. So far so good, everything seemed to be going well. The day of the interview arrived. I approached the office building with everything I needed to make a good impression. I was dressed up and I had an extra copy of my resume and references on me just in case, I needed them.

I entered the building and the receptionist said, “Have a seat, and someone will be with you shortly.” I waited for a few minutes before a woman approached me from another room. She said, “follow me.” I followed her into a much larger room with lots of chairs and a white board facing the chairs. She said to me this will be a group interview and we will get started in a few minutes after the rest of the people are here. Within the next ten minutes the room filled up with people. I started to get nervous and to wonder, “boy is this really the kind of job interview that I thought it was going to be.” At this point, I still wasn’t really sure what was going to happen.

Then it started, a man got up in front of the room and began talking to us all about their “opportunity”. He told us all kinds of testimonials about how great their vitamins and water filters are. He asked the audience, how many of us had ever been or currently were in sales positions where we were paid on commission. At the time I was working for my local ballet department in their marketing and sales department so I was working for hourly plus commission. He then proceeded to explain that the positions they were offering paid a lot more than your average sales job.

However, what came next is what got me really upset that I was wasting my time. He said that we would have to buy our own kit to get started for about $200. Then he began talking about going door to door to sell their products and at that point, I got up and started to leave since I realized that I had been tricked into a network marketing presentation instead of a job. The woman who had placed the ad and invited me briefly asked me why I was leaving and I simply said, “This is not what I thought it was.” I then left and was quite annoyed at the whole situation.

Has this ever happened to you? If so, what did you do? At the time I thought I would never start a network marketing business. This was one of many similar situations which had me persuaded that network marketing was not for me.
Well now after over 4 years as a network marketer, I can say that with the right company and the right opportunity, nearly anyone can succeed and even thrive.

4. Stay connected with your friends new and old by sending them a hello message, checking out their blog or website and asking them a question about it or writing a cheerful message on their wall.

5. Repost links on your wall of the content of others that you find valuable and interesting.

6. Comment on photos, statuses and other things posted by others. Offer good uplifting comments.

7. Take the relationship offline and get to know your friends outside of social networking.

8. Use the chat feature to be friendly and communicate with some of your friends from time to time.

Golden Retrievers do not need to be taught how to be friendly. They are cute, cuddly and fun even from the time they are first born. As humans we too know how to do these things. Consider how easily we made friends as children. However, for some reason when we get online in social networks such as facebook too many of us forget how to be friendly and fun because we heard that people are making tons of money on facebook so we focus only on the money.

Goldens also like to play and to have fun. When using facebook to build your business, you need to be careful though that you are not playing too much. Learn how to have fun and show your personality and be you without wasting time. Some great ways to do this include:

1. Telling real life stories that people can relate to. These can include funny stories or embarrassing moments.
2. Posting pictures of your everyday life for others to see.
3. Posting videos from parties and events that you attend.

Here are some questions you should ask before you start a home party business.

1. What products do I really enjoy and do I believe that I could sell these at parties for several years and still enjoy them even after hundreds of parties featuring the same product line?

2. How many parties will I be required to host each month, or quarter in order to stay active? Some companies have high requirements and you need to make sure that you can continue to keep going even when it is hard. Other home party businesses do not have number requirements and hosting home parties may even be an option rather than a requirement. Which one of these suits you best?

3. Who do you know that will help you get started with your first few home parties? Already knowing who you can count on to assist you in getting your home party business started will make it much easier for you to succeed.

4. How much product do you have to sell or purchase each month or quarter? If the amount is too high you may find it difficult to keep up and the stress may eventually cause you to quit.

5. Is the company I am considering joining a solid one? Will they still be here a few years from now? What kind of support will they give me? It is crucial to spend enough time evaluating any home party business company that you are going to join and to make sure you choose the right one for you.

6. How will I be paid? Some companies require you to buy all of your inventory up front and in some cases you have to even pay for it at retail price and then you are reimbursed the difference between retail price and wholesale price at the end of the month. Although these companies can be great opportunities for some people, you will need to have high cash flow in order to maintain this kind of a business. Other companies sell to you at wholesale price or let you order only after the product is sold. These are easier for the part time person or for someone with less cash flow to maintain.

7. What other options exist for building your home party business? Are you able to also do fundraisers, shows, person to person selling, the internet and other ways of selling? Or are home parties really the only option for building a business? The more options you have available to you for building your business the better.
