At home businesses can be great. However there are many myths out there about what it takes to succeed as well as what it is really like to be an at home business owner. Learn about what seven of these myths are and decide if you really want to take the plunge.
1. They are easy
Many people mistakenly think that at home businesses are easy. The reality is though that they are tough, really tough and can be much more difficult than working any job no matter what the job is.
2. They are cheap to start
Many times this myth comes as a result of people thinking that they are free or getting starting an at home business confused with a work from home job. Even if the opportunity you choose costs less than $50 to start, you are going to have on-going monthly and annual costs and depending upon the type of business, these are probably going to be at least a couple of hundred dollars.
3. They are worked only from home.
Again this comes usually from the idea of a home business, however, in many if not all cases, most at home business owners work their business at least some of the time from other locations such as fairs, shows, the homes of others, offices, stores, and networking meetings. If you are unable or not willing to work your at home business at least part of the time from other places, then you should not start your business.
4. They are worked only online.
Even online businesses are seldom worked only online. In many cases, you must still go to networking meetings, speak with people face to face about your business and use the telephone. You cannot just use the computer and make the kind of money that you would like.
5. They are profitable the first month.
Although it certainly is possible, in many cases at home business owners do not make money right away and if they do, then they usually have to invest that profit back into the business for a few months. An at home business is not a job and it is crucial that you realize the differences.
6. They are the only source of income.
In many cases, the same people who run these at home businesses also have other businesses, jobs or a spouse with a job. Some people are successful enough that they do not need anything else but most still do.
7. It is difficult to succeed.
This is a mixed bag because while yes they are difficult if you do what needs to be done and you are consistent and patient then your chances of success are very high.
