7 Essential Principles of a Detox Diet

Have you ever tried a detox diet? Detox diets are quite popular and I’ve seen a lot of articles on them and I’ve heard a lot of people trying them and I personally had to go on a very strong detox diet last Summer in order to heal from some severe allergy, gut and auto-immune issues. However, detox diets aren’t always what they seem and if you do a detox diet wrong, it can backfire and cause you more problems than not doing a detox diet. So here are seven essential principles of a detox diet, that I learned based on my own experiences with one.

1. Be well prepared for your detox diet. This includes planning menus, shopping and knowing in advance what obstacles you will encounter. The more prepared you are, the more likely you are to succeed.

2. Know that you will probably get sicker during the first week of your detox diet and that you will probably feel worse before you feel better. This is just a part of detoxing and the worse your health is, the worse your detox will be. It’s worth it so keep pushing forward.

3. Have a long term health goal that you are working for as well as clear reasons why you are doing your detox diet. Doing one just because you heard it was a good idea, or because a friend is doing one is a bad idea. You won’t stick with it and it won’t do you as much good.

4. Assist the help of a holistic provider such as a naturopath, acupuncturist, or a chiropractor. This is especially important if you are experiencing serious health issues. You probably won’t be able to do a successful detox diet without professional assistance.

5. Enlist the help of your family, roommates or friends. This will help you reduce cravings and limit situations where you will likely be tempted to break your detox diet.

6. Create a reward or incentive for when you are through. Make it something you want badly enough that you will stick with your diet for the long term and make sure that you do not get the prize unless you complete your detox.

7. Consider finding others who are also doing a detox diet who can support you and encourage you to success. Friends, family and others can encourage you but if they aren’t doing a detox with you, their support will have a limited effect on your long term success.
