Have you seen the recent Old Spice videos on youtube and on other social media platforms? If not, you really need to check them out. Not only are they quite clever but you can learn a lot from him about how to run a successful social media marketing campaign.

Mashable.com wrote a blog post to summarize this funny and highly successful old spice social media campaign. What lessons can we as small business owners learn though from him? Even though we may not have the equipment and resources to create fancy videos like many of theirs, there is a lot we can do and that we can learn.

1. Make your social media marketing unique. The Old Spice guy videos where clever, and unique. It is highly unlikely that we will see anything quite like it ever.

2. Communicate directly with your audience. Many of the Old Spice guy videos were popular because he used video to directly answer back to the tweets that many of his users sent him. Not only did he answer their questions but he also called the users by name.

3. He responded back to the requests of those who were communicating with him. For example, there was a librarian on twitter who asked him to comment on the importance of libraries and so he did it. What can you do to better respond to the requests of your social media audience?

4. Make your social media marketing entertaining. The Old Spice guy videos were very entertaining. How can you be more entertaining and amusing and less boring?

5. The Old Spice campaign had a specified beginning and ending date. It did not continue on forever. What can you do to create a buzz for a short period of time? While you always continue to market you can find ways to create a clever, short and sweet campaign that does not last forever.

6. Planning in advance how your social media marketing will work is crucial. If you look at many of the videos while they may be addressed to the needs and questions of a specific person, it is obvious that the people who planned this social media campaign did not just do everything on the fly. They had a specific plan and knew the how, the where, the what and the why of their social media campaign. Can you say the same about your social media marketing?

7. The Old Spice marketing campaign used more than one social media platform. While youtube and twitter where their main tools they also used facebook. They did not rely on only one platform to do the job. Are you using as many platforms as you can in order to give your marketing more reach?

8. Their marketing campaign went viral. Even though it is now over, everyone is talking about it and other people are trying to make marketing campaigns that are spin-offs of theirs. What can you do to make your social media marketing go viral?

9. The Old Spice guy knew who is target market was. He focused mostly on ladies who are looking for and wanting their man to smell great. He knew that this would be more powerful than marketing only to men who are the ones who use their product. Are you focusing your marketing on the right target market?

10. Do you compliment your readers and audience enough? If you listen to many of the responses sent via video by the Old Spice Guy you will notice that he gives a lot of compliments and praise. People love this. How can you use more compliments and praise with your social media marketing?

Thoughts? Ideas? What do you think about the recent Old Spice Social Media Campaign and how you can use these concepts with your business?
